This past March, our Linden 5th Graders headed out to the UC Field Center in Harrison for an incredible hands-on journey through the heart of our local ecosystems. Despite the early spring chill, these young scientists spent the day traversing a diverse landscape of ponds, streams, prairies, and forests, acting as field researchers at every turn. From the thrill of bird watching in the budding canopy to the messy fun of collecting aquatic organisms from the stream, the students saw firsthand how life begins to stir this time of year. Beyond just observing, they dove deep into the mechanics of nature by identifying the decomposers recycling nutrients on the forest floor and learning the critical importance of managing invasive species that threaten our native prairie. It was an unforgettable March day of exploration that turned the great outdoors into a living classroom for our 5th-grade team!
